The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer here in NYC. According to a coworker, everyday we are loosing five minutes of sunlight…how fun! If you are looking for a unique & additional way to light your bike as the seasons change, check out the following wheel lights.

Nite Ize Spokelit Bicycle Light, $7-8

Simple and bright, these lights attach to your spokes and light your wheels green or red. They come in a strobe or solid function, are easy to install and increase your side visibility.

Monkey Light Bike Light, $59.99

You might have heard of these guys from their Kickstarter project. These 23 LED lights and display full color 8-bit graphics on your spinning bike wheel. They are programmable and allow for you to select different colors and patterns. Looks for a product review coming soon!

These LEDs which screw into your bicycle valves are the most economical choice. They come in blue, pink, yellow and green. Be sure you have Schrader valves or the won’t attach. They are cheap and the accelerometer can be spotty at times.

It’s been awhile since I mentioned Fast Boy, a local NYC bike builder on the blog. For those of you that have seen my wooden fenders, he made them and I almost love them more than my Surly. Fast Boy bicycles are some of the most beautiful handcrafted bikes. They are a throwback to another century but modern and sleek at the same time.

Fast Boy’s story (or rather Ezra of Fast Boy) is a powerful one that I’ve been following for several years. He has been fighting for his life battling colon cancer and has been documenting that experience on his blog. Ezra recently wrote about about a beautiful new cargo bike that he’s been working on called the Nose Bike.

NYC presents an interesting challenge when it comes to cargo bikes. Theft is bad enough that most people aren’t willing to leave their bikes outside.. And most people don’t have garages! let alone their very own front door. I liked the idea of making something with decent cargo capacity that still rode well, and was small/light enough to be able to carry up to your fifth floor walk up!

About a week ago I decided to assert myself a little and get this idea out of my head and on to the road. It’s not a new idea. Small front wheel. Frame mounted rack. Carrying cargo in the front allows you to keep the wheelbase pretty short since you’re not having to avoid your heels as they pedal. The frame mounted rack all but completely gets rid of the handling problems usually associated with front loads. The small front wheel gets that weight nice and low so that the bike isn’t top heavy and doesn’t want to fall over sideways quite so badly! via [FastBoy]

Ezra is taking orders for the Nose Bike now and his bikes go fast so check it out if you are so inclined! More photos here.

[Alexander Vittouris's James Dyson Award] entry, called the Ajiro, is a bicycle style transport that’s composed of bamboo – but with a twist. Rather than going through the complicated process of steaming and bending bamboo to suit his shape, he actually used a reusable skeleton to guide the shape of the bamboo as it grew. In other words, the frame of the vehicle was “grown” rather than manufactured.

There are more attractive ways to store all those bikes in your house rather than hang them from basic hooks in the wall. If you are looking for other options, check out this bike shelf post from Chris Brigham on Swissmiss earlier today. Love it!

Made from solid wood (in this case, Walnut) and suspended by a solid steel square rod mount, this shelf can hold both your bike, as well as anything else you want on it quite easily. If you want to just showcase your bike, that’s fine, but if you want to utilize the space for books, flowers, bike accessories, etc., that’s what it’s there for.

Enjoy creative ideas? Make art? Papergirl NYC is looking for “rollable” art submissions by Aug 15th. Papergirl began 5 years ago in Berlin as artists took their art to the streets imitating paperboys. PaperGirl distributes art to strangers on the street by bike after the art is shown in a gallery.

This year Papergirl will be exhibiting at the Dumbo Art Center from August 23-27, and then again at the Armory in Manhattan from August 28-29. The same art will then be shown at the Marketplace Gallery in Albany from September 3-6, and the art will be distributed in its home city the week thereafter.

Send submissions/get more info at PaperGirl.Albany@gmail.com and Papergirl NY.

A cheap price tag, flashy colors and an Urban Outfitters collaboration helped Republic Bikes take off. Now we are starting to see Jellybean Bikes and Bikes by Me.

Bike by Me is another step towards simplicity in the custom colored bike game. The brand launched earlier this month, with it’s home base in Sweden. Visit the Bike by Me site and see what you can come up with.
