Food Truck Bike Ride from Brooklyn to Queens Recap

Even though I couldn’t join my fellow cyclists on bike this past Sunday for our food cart ride because of a leg injury, I still had a great time crawling the street for delicious Ecuadorian, Mexican and Halal food. A big thanks to Danny, Steve and Noel for helping lead and to Ryan for giving me lift on the back of his Workman Cycle to ended the day at Corona Ice King! #BikeNYC folks are rad.

I joined about 30 other biking foodies today for a trip to the food trucks on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens — one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world. If you love food adventures, this is place is a MUST-visit! There were at least a dozen trucks along a 15-or-so block stretch of Roosevelt serving up everything from shrimp ceviche to pig ear tacos.

Thanks to Anita of Brooklyn by Bike for bringing everyone together once again.

Summer Streets Kicks Off Tomorrow Aug 7th

[Hey did you see we have a new ride to Queens Aug 15th to eat our way through the street food carts? Join us!]

“Summer Streets takes place on consecutive Saturdays August 7, 14 and 21 from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm. The 2010 route connects the Brooklyn Bridge with Central Park with recommended connections along low-traffic streets to the Hudson River Greenway, Harlem and Governors Island allowing participants to plan a route as long or short as they wish. This event takes a valuable public space – our City’s streets – and opens them up to people to play, walk, bike, and breathe. ” via NYC DOT

Don’t forget this year there will be dumpster pools on the streets! Three Dumpster pools will be located on the east side of Park Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets. The pools will be open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. via NYT

Art + Bicycles = Papergirl. Submission deadline Aug 15th.

Enjoy creative ideas? Make art? Papergirl NYC is looking for “rollable” art submissions by Aug 15th. Papergirl began 5 years ago in Berlin as artists took their art to the streets imitating paperboys. PaperGirl distributes art to strangers on the street by bike after the art is shown in a gallery.

This year Papergirl will be exhibiting at the Dumbo Art Center from August 23-27, and then again at the Armory in Manhattan from August 28-29. The same art will then be shown at the Marketplace Gallery in Albany from September 3-6, and the art will be distributed in its home city the week thereafter.

Hey cycling friends in New York City! Come join us this Friday (7/23) at Adeline Adeline for beer, good company and discounts on bicycle accessories. Adeline Adeline (147 Reade St in Tribeca) is friendly, female owned bike shop that specializes in dutch and city commuter cycles. We’ll be meeting up at 6:30pm followed by a ride at 7:30pm up the West Side Greenway to the Pier 1 Cafe on 70th St.

Rapha Cycle Club + Tour de France + Rides

Those of you in NYC may know that the Rapha Cycle Club pop-up shop recently opened on 325 Bowery. The space offers Third Rail coffee, cycling themed books and pricey, stylish cycling clothes. It is also a great space to sit and watch the Tour de France with its ample seating and multiple TVs. Add the indoor bike parking and it’s the perfect urban cycling oasis. It’s definitely worth checking out for the space. Don’t except a full line of products though. Selection is slim especially for the women’s line.

Rapha Cycle Club also organizes groups rides out over the G-W and along River Road every Wednesday at 8am.

Part retail store, part café, part gallery; Rapha Cycle Club will be a meeting place where cyclists can celebrate the glory and suffering of road racing.

Bike Personalization Options Expand

One might argue that custom bikes have long been around since the days of the hand-built bike but now with the accessibility of the web and the global marketplace were are starting to see the customized bike marketplace explode. A cheap price tag, flashy colors and an Urban Outfitters collaboration helped Republic Bikes take off. Now we are starting to see Jellybean Bikes and Bikes by Me.

Bike by Me is another step towards simplicity in the custom colored bike game. The brand launched earlier this month, with it’s home base in Sweden. Visit the Bike by Me site and see what you can come up with. [via Highsnobiety]

Rolling Orange Bike Shop Opening. 12- 2pm, 269 Baltic Street Brooklyn – Rolling Orange is introducing Dutch cargo and city bikes as common part of the Brooklyn streetscape.

World Naked Bike Ride. 5pm, Grand Ferry Park Brooklyn – “Nudity is not requisite. Please join as ‘bare as you dare’ and use your body and bike to create the massive numbers needed to make this effective. Be part of the history and a new link to environmental awareness and activism in NYC!”

DOB-C Rides Brooklyn Pride. 7pm, 14th st between 5th and 6th Ave – All riders and walkers welcome!

Sunday

Brooklyn by Bike ride to Governors Island! 1pm, Grand Army Plaza Arch - Governors Island has more than five miles of car free biking and is the home of Figment this weekend. Plus we will be celebrating our #bikenyc buddy’s birthday by playing croquet and eating and drinking to our heart’s content. New folks always welcome! This is a casual ride and great opportunity to meet like-minded bike loving folks as we explore Brooklyn and Governors Island. The ride is about 12 mi roundtrip and we suggest you bring food, water, games, ect to share. Join us!

Pop Up Bicycle Basket via MIO

Bikes with Horns: Bi-King by Sung Kug Kim

These wooden bicycle handlebar horns by Sung Kug Kim are totally impractical but beautiful pieces of art.

I totally love the mixture of wood with the steel, it’s a beautiful combination that looks both industrial and natural all at once. I know that the antler ones are a bit more impractical, but c’mon, you’d definitely take a second (or third) look if someone passed you on the street with something like these. [via Design Sponge]

Kickstand Coffee: Mobile Coffee on Bikes at McCarren Park

Kickstand Coffee launches this Saturday May 15th at McCarren Park in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Kickstand uses bicycles for transportation and for a portion of their power in brewing coffee. You can check them out on their website or @kickstandcoffee.
