Just saw this post on Swissmiss and found it to be stunning! Joseph Griffiths creates a bicycle drawing machine.

I could spend hours on this thing.

Epic Bicycle Sculpture

“The Tower of Babel. The Great Pyramids. The Leaning Tower of Pisa. That pantheon of epic structures wasn’t compete until Cyclisk: a 65-foot tall, 10,000-pound obelisk comprising about 340 bicycles, a tricycle, and a healthy disregard for proportion.

The sculpture, which resides in Santa Rosa, California, was built by artists Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector, and cost $37,000 to build. [via Gizmodo]”

Enjoy creative ideas? Make art? Papergirl NYC is looking for “rollable” art submissions by Aug 15th. Papergirl began 5 years ago in Berlin as artists took their art to the streets imitating paperboys. PaperGirl distributes art to strangers on the street by bike after the art is shown in a gallery.

This year Papergirl will be exhibiting at the Dumbo Art Center from August 23-27, and then again at the Armory in Manhattan from August 28-29. The same art will then be shown at the Marketplace Gallery in Albany from September 3-6, and the art will be distributed in its home city the week thereafter.

Bikes with Horns: Bi-King by Sung Kug Kim

These wooden bicycle handlebar horns by Sung Kug Kim are totally impractical but beautiful pieces of art.

I totally love the mixture of wood with the steel, it’s a beautiful combination that looks both industrial and natural all at once. I know that the antler ones are a bit more impractical, but c’mon, you’d definitely take a second (or third) look if someone passed you on the street with something like these. [via Design Sponge]

History of Cycling in Brooklyn Art Installation

Eric Corriel, a Brooklyn based artist has created an interactive video installation that explores the history of bicycle culture in Brooklyn from 1880 to today. The piece is viewable at sundown on Clinton and Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights from now until January 3rd, 2010 but check the calendar to be sure.

He’s looking for photo and video submissions from the cycling community. Help him out and become a part of the installation! [via Brooklyn Cycling]

Bike as Art – Spoke POV

In honor of this historic day, we bring back a beautiful photo of an Obama led spoke set. I haven’t been this inspired in a very long time. Yes we can!

SpokePOV has been getting a lot of press recently thanks to Aneel’s awe inspiring LED Obama spoke display. [via Aneel on Flickr].

It got me thinking more about bike as art. SpokePOV has kits for sale on their site and allows you to customize your wheels however you want. I can’t think of better way to increase biker visibility while making a statement. This project has a good deal of science and soldering thrown in there for fun.

Their site explains the sience stating, “A SpokePOV is a ‘stick’ of LEDs with a magnetic (hall effect) sensor on the outer end. When a magnet passes by, the microcontroller takes note. By counting how long it takes between magnet passes, SpokePOV can tell how fast its rotating and quickly blink the LEDS to present an image. Therefore, no matter how fast you are riding, the image will show up correctly!” I love it and think it would be perfect thing to bring to the Brooklyn Halloween bike ride.

Streetsy Daily Streetart Photos – Biking as Art

When reading Streetsy’s post “40 Artists You Should Know Besides Banksy,” we found a lonely image at the bottom by bike. It got me thinking about biking as art in itself.

Three things come to mind when I think of the intersection of biking and art. The first being that of the bike itself, the second being that of the movement and rhythm and the third being that of alternating between a state of hyper-awareness and auto pilot…scary I know.

The kids these days, at least in Brooklyn, have really started to pimp out their bikes. You can find cycles out there that cost more than cars but it’s not just money that I’m talking about here. Bikes are the perfect canvases for art whether that be in the hardware or on the surface. Two of my favorite images are below…
