3rd Annual Tour de Taco is coming Oct 9th

The most common question I am asked on all of my rides is, “when are you guys doing Tour de Taco?” It’s here people! Come join us October 9th, 11am under the Grand Army Plaza Arch, Brooklyn. RSVPs are open.

Tour de Taco 2011 will include five stops through Brooklyn and Queens. It is a fun and causal ride brought to you by three friends who love tacos and bicycles -myself, Emily and Tishon. This year’s ride will be capped to 75 people. If you show up and we are over the limit you are welcome to ride on your own.

Taco joints (subject to change) include:

Los Hermanos – Bushwick
TBD – Sunset Park
La Esquina – Williamsburg
El Globo – Corona
Roosevelt Ave Trucks – Queens
After party & group reunion @ Dekalb Market

For a pre tour meetup, come say hello at our #bikenyc meetup on Oct 4th @ 7 pm at Red Lantern Bicycles (345 Myrtle). There will be free beer, fun cyclists and your friendly organizers.

Tomorrow 8/13 our Summer Streets ride and upcoming events

Hey #bikeNYC we’ve got great weather tomorrow 8/13! It’s perfect for a Summer Streets ride from Brooklyn to the Upper West Side. Come join us on this fun car-free ride along Park Avenue! The street will be shut down to car traffic all morning. This ride ends at 70thSt and Riverside for a beer at Pier Cafe.

Meetup at 11am under the Grand Army Plaza Arch. More info on our ride page. Hope to see you there!

Ride to Ft. Tilden Beach Tomorrow with Times-Up

We’re all about last minute #bikenyc here at Brooklyn by Bike and hope some of you are too. Tomorrow we’re riding with Times-Up to Ft. Tilden Beach.

Fort Tilden includes some of the most secluded beaches in New York. A guy on Yelp says, “I would have come to Fort Tilden if I had to take every single train and bus that the MTA operates to get here. Yes, this beach is THAT amazing.” People on the internet are always right so come join us tomorrow, July 4th!

Meetup is at 11:30am at Grand Army Plaza. This ride is about 15 miles one way. See you in your swimsuit.

This Past Weekend, Governors Island Ride

We are in the third year of Brooklyn by Bike rides and I cannot believe it! Time is flying so fast. I’ve meet so many amazing people on these rides, many of whom have become regulars and close friends. I’m happy to be riding again this year.

We kicked off the season with a ride to Governors Island for Figment festival. This ride becoming one of my favorites because of it’s proximity to Brooklyn, the free ferry ride over and the car free island. Not to mention Figment is always so much fun and full of interactive art and music.

Food Truck Bike Ride from Brooklyn to Queens Recap

Even though I couldn’t join my fellow cyclists on bike this past Sunday for our food cart ride because of a leg injury, I still had a great time crawling the street for delicious Ecuadorian, Mexican and Halal food. A big thanks to Danny, Steve and Noel for helping lead and to Ryan for giving me lift on the back of his Workman Cycle to ended the day at Corona Ice King! #BikeNYC folks are rad.

I joined about 30 other biking foodies today for a trip to the food trucks on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens — one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world. If you love food adventures, this is place is a MUST-visit! There were at least a dozen trucks along a 15-or-so block stretch of Roosevelt serving up everything from shrimp ceviche to pig ear tacos.

Thanks to Anita of Brooklyn by Bike for bringing everyone together once again.

Rooftop Films presents Biker Fox. $10, 8pm @ Open Road Rooftops, 300 Grand St. – “Calling Frank P DeLarzelere III (AKA Biker Fox) a local celebrity is misleading–he is more an agitator than he is a prized local son. As a proponent of bicycles as a primary means of transportation, he is fighting an uphill battle against a Southern community that loves its cars, worships horsepower, and doesn’t always smile upon long haired, flamboyantly dressed eccentrics calling for cultural or lifestyle changes.”

Rolling Orange Bike Shop Opening. 12- 2pm, 269 Baltic Street Brooklyn – Rolling Orange is introducing Dutch cargo and city bikes as common part of the Brooklyn streetscape.

World Naked Bike Ride. 5pm, Grand Ferry Park Brooklyn – “Nudity is not requisite. Please join as ‘bare as you dare’ and use your body and bike to create the massive numbers needed to make this effective. Be part of the history and a new link to environmental awareness and activism in NYC!”

DOB-C Rides Brooklyn Pride. 7pm, 14th st between 5th and 6th Ave – All riders and walkers welcome!

Sunday

Brooklyn by Bike ride to Governors Island! 1pm, Grand Army Plaza Arch - Governors Island has more than five miles of car free biking and is the home of Figment this weekend. Plus we will be celebrating our #bikenyc buddy’s birthday by playing croquet and eating and drinking to our heart’s content. New folks always welcome! This is a casual ride and great opportunity to meet like-minded bike loving folks as we explore Brooklyn and Governors Island. The ride is about 12 mi roundtrip and we suggest you bring food, water, games, ect to share. Join us!

Upcoming Bike Events – Bike Lane Debate, Race, Ride

Tonight! January 25: The Great Williamsburg Bike Wars: A Public Debate w/Caroline Samponaro, Heather Loop, Isaac Abraham @ Pete’s Candy Store – 709 Lorimer St Brooklyn NY, 7:30pm.

Just before Christmas, 2009, a war broke out on the bike lanes of Williamsburg. On one side: the Hasidic Jewish community of the Southside, who had advocated–successfully–for Mayor Bloomberg to remove the Bedford Ave Bike lane. On the other side: A coalition of bikesters, whose defiance led them to re-paint the bike lanes, and threaten a topless ride in protest (it was snowed out in the blizzard of ’09). Moderating: Hasidic bike enthusiast Baruch Herzfeld.

Saturday January 30th: Haiti Benefit Race @ Tompkins Square Park followed by an after party w/goldsprints @ Bklyn Wrek Room – 940 Flushing Ave Brooklyn NY

Saturday January 30th: Transporation Alternatives Brooklyn Commitee hosts their monthly ride. Check the TA calendar for route and time closer to the date.

Gears & Grub Ride Recap!

Sunny 60 degree weather in October spent on a bicycle with a group of friendly people had to have been the best way to end a season of rides here on Brooklyn by Bike!

Our Gears & Grub ride with VendrTV hit famed street food spots in Brooklyn from Sunset Park Chinatown to the Red Hook ball fields and the Brooklyn Flea.

Our Bike Ride to Governors Island

Last Saturday 7/18, the Brooklyn by Bike crew headed off our island to Governors Island (directions below). We enjoyed beautiful weather, a free ferry ride and good food from award-winning street vendors courtesy of City of Water Day. Governors Island is a great family friendly place to enjoy car free biking, art installations and unique architecture.

You too can do the same any Saturday as a free ferry travels from Brooklyn’s Fulton Ferry Landing (the pier with the ice cream shop over by Grimaldi’s Pizza) to Governors Island. Map below.

Ride to Floyd Bennett Field

Wow. We’ve seriously been lucky with the amazing weather and turn out for our rides…either that or Brooklyn by Bike is more popular than we thought! This Saturday we rode out to Floyd Bennett field on quiet streets and even quieter greenways. For those of you that don’t know Floyd Bennett field was New York City’s original airport and was left abandoned for many years. It’s still semi-abandoned though more people are catching on to the space. The day was sunny and warm and a bunch of us even got to check out the airplane hanger museum.

Overall, it was another beautiful day filled with new friends and a great ride. Hey, come to our next ride as we tour Red Hook and eat delicious food at the ball fields.
