Winter is here and while it may feel like time to curl up into a ball indoors, there are still fun bike related events going on in NYC!

Tonight, December 5th from 6:30-9:30pm is Recycle a Bicycle’s Annual Benefit. Tickets start at just $25 and go to a great cause. Bike friends, it’s been far to long since we’ve had our last #bikenyc meetup! Join us Oct 4th from 7-9pm @ Red Lantern Bicycles, 345 Myrtle Ave for a free happy hour and of course the opportunity to reconnect with all of your cycling friends. This October also marks Brooklyn by Bike’s 3rd birthday and my actual birthday so come out and let’s have a toast!

Two Fun Upcoming Winter Rides Dec 17-19th

Dec 17th: Hosted by Marcy and Kim from Adeline Adeline, a bike ride to an art gallery and then off skating in Bryant Park.

Meet at Union Square south side (across from Whole Foods) at 7pm.

Dec 19th: Hosted by Times Up and joined by the DOB-C, a ride to check out the Christmas lights of Dyker Heights.

Meet in Manhattan at 4:30 pm, across from the bicycle entrance to the Manhattan Bridge

Join us for a fun and leisurely ride to see the “miracle mile” of Christmas Lights and decorations in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. The spectacular displays draw 150,000 visitors a year who come from as far away as Japan. So come prepared with bicycle bells ringing to the tune of Jingle Bells. Approx. 25 miles round trip.

Hey cycling friends in New York City! Come join us this Friday (7/23) at Adeline Adeline for beer, good company and discounts on bicycle accessories. Adeline Adeline (147 Reade St in Tribeca) is friendly, female owned bike shop that specializes in dutch and city commuter cycles. We’ll be meeting up at 6:30pm followed by a ride at 7:30pm up the West Side Greenway to the Pier 1 Cafe on 70th St.

Bike Snob Comes Out & Talks about Bike Culture, So?

This week, Bike Snob revealed himself to be a 36 year old dude named Eben Weiss. Some folks in the bike community are upset but with a new book launch and promotional events in the works, but he has made himself highly marketable. With his newly reveled identity, Eben will be speaking at an upcoming Transportation Alternatives Bike Culture Summit on May 6 with David Herlihy, author of “Bicycle: The History.” Tickets are on sale April 1 on TA’s website. The event might actually be entertaining, but a part of me sees it as another dry panel with a couple of middle aged white guys talking about bicycles. Is this really more of what our community needs – a guy from the Harvard Cycling Club talking about bike culture? I want to see all type of folks out there on bicycles, and panels like this don’t help change the image of cycling. If TA really wants to get more bicycles on the road, they are going to need everybody so why not start speaking to us all?

Activists Spraypaint Potholes with Onomatopoeia

This week marked the first time many bike NYC folks hit the streets since winter. Our bit of good weather combined with Google Maps launch of bicycling directions has made for an exciting bicycle filled week. Add to it this little find of activists taking to the streets to mark potholes with onomatopoeia.

Toronto’s street artist and bike activist collective Urban Repair Squad, known for making radical interventions in on-street signage to promote cyclists’ safety, recently unveiled a project. Their Pothole Onomatopoeia series appeared on Toronto’s Harbord Street recently, pointing out irregularities in the pavement with arrows and old school-Batman-style words like “THUNK!,” “OUCH!” and “OOF!” stenciled onto the street with bright spray paint. I personally hit a pothole pretty hard this morning, but luckily didn’t get a flat. Friends have not been so lucky. Apparently if you are motorist you can file a claim with the city should you hit a pothole, but what about the cyclists? Anyone know if there is something in place for us?

Our Ride to the Kissena Park Velodrome in Queens

Out in the heart of Queens there is a little known velodrome buzzing with track racers from the area. We rode out there this past Sunday to watch the New York state elite finals. Though most us of didn’t know the first thing about track racing (no brakes, no gears), a racer from MIT was kind enough to explain the matches and the rules.

We learned a little something, got to watch the 20 lap races and meet some fantastic people on our way. Post ride we even had our second #bikenyc tweetup at Berry Park. As one of our riders put it, “cycling must really be marginalized if this is the big state event and you can’t even get a sandwich.” It’s true. We could all stand to support our local cycling community a bit more and I definitely recommend you check out the Kissena velodrome. They have some upcoming labor day events. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen.

A Bike Tweetup, Summer Streets and More

Tomorrow kicks off the beginning of #bikenyc tweetups. For those of you unfamiliar with Twitter, it’s basically a gathering of people who are interested and/or twitter about biking in NYC and you are most definitely welcome to join!

The tweetup kicks off 8/5, 6:15 at Bicycle Habitat for beverages and discounts, leaves at 7pm and is followed by a ride uptown to 70th st at Pier 1. For the folks who work uptown, you can just meet at Pier 1 as well. I will probably be there early with tired legs wondering how I will make it back to BK, join! Summer Streets – you know when NYC closes down the Park and Lafayette Avenues to traffic – begins this Saturday! TA Brooklyn has planned rides for each of the dates beginning at 8:30am at Grand Army Plaza. RSVP here.

Summer Streets will take place for three consecutive Saturdays in August (August 8, 15, 22) from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm. The route will connect the Brooklyn Bridge with Central Park and there will be recommended connections along low-traffic streets to the Hudson River Greenway, Harlem and Governors Island allowing participants to plan a route as long or short as they wish.
