This past Saturday, our Summer Streets ride!

We rode out to Summer Streets this past Saturday from Grand Army Plaza to 72nd St and Central Park. From there we ended the ride at 70th St and Riverside at the Pier Cafe. It was fun to meet so many new faces on this ride and for some folks it was their first bike ride into Manhattan.

Summer Streets is a great introduction to cycling in the city because for 5 miles or so, some of Manhattan’s busiest streets are closed to motor vehicle traffic. We took the Brooklyn Bridge over which connects right to the route. The bridge was the busiest I’ve seen in my 6+ years in NYC! If you missed this ride, you still have one Saturday left. It’s one of my favorite summer events and I highly recommend checking it out. Our route is below.

Tomorrow 8/13 our Summer Streets ride and upcoming events

Hey #bikeNYC we’ve got great weather tomorrow 8/13! It’s perfect for a Summer Streets ride from Brooklyn to the Upper West Side. Come join us on this fun car-free ride along Park Avenue! The street will be shut down to car traffic all morning. This ride ends at 70thSt and Riverside for a beer at Pier Cafe.

Summer Streets NYC is Back!

Our lovely Transportation Commissioner Janet Sadik-Khan recently announced that Summer Streets will be back for three weekends in August. This means that seven miles of Manhattan streets will be a car free paradise for cyclists and pedestrians.

NYC DOT and its partners are proud to present Summer Streets. This summer, for the fourth year in a row, Summer Streets will temporarily close Park Avenue and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park to motor vehicles and open it up to people on three consecutive Saturdays in August (August 6, 13, & 20).

Check it out. Bring your bike. These make great rides for everyone.

A Bike Tweetup, Summer Streets and More

Tomorrow kicks off the beginning of #bikenyc tweetups. For those of you unfamiliar with Twitter, it’s basically a gathering of people who are interested and/or twitter about biking in NYC and you are most definitely welcome to join!

The tweetup kicks off 8/5, 6:15 at Bicycle Habitat for beverages and discounts, leaves at 7pm and is followed by a ride uptown to 70th st at Pier 1. For the folks who work uptown, you can just meet at Pier 1 as well. I will probably be there early with tired legs wondering how I will make it back to BK, join! Summer Streets – you know when NYC closes down the Park and Lafayette Avenues to traffic – begins this Saturday! TA Brooklyn has planned rides for each of the dates beginning at 8:30am at Grand Army Plaza. RSVP here.

Summer Streets will take place for three consecutive Saturdays in August (August 8, 15, 22) from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm. The route will connect the Brooklyn Bridge with Central Park and there will be recommended connections along low-traffic streets to the Hudson River Greenway, Harlem and Governors Island allowing participants to plan a route as long or short as they wish. Our Bike Ride to Governors Island

Last Saturday 7/18, the Brooklyn by Bike crew headed off our island to Governors Island (directions below). We enjoyed beautiful weather, a free ferry ride and good food from award-winning street vendors courtesy of City of Water Day. Governors Island is a great family friendly place to enjoy car free biking, art installations and unique architecture.

You too can do the same any Saturday as a free ferry travels from Brooklyn’s Fulton Ferry Landing (the pier with the ice cream shop over by Grimaldi’s Pizza) to Governors Island. Map below.
