Tour de Taco #3, Success!

Our biggest and most anticipated ride, Tour de Taco went off without a hitch this past Sunday! Around 75+ riders joined us for one last summer day (85 degrees!) and five different taco spots. A big thanks to my co-organizers Tishon and Emily and to our added leaders, Danny and Matt. Also thanks to all the riders and readers who came out. Without you all, it wouldn’t have been possible or fun!

The itinerary included:

Los Hermanos – Bushwick
El Globo – Corona, Queens
Roosevelt Ave Taco Trucks
Acapulco - Greenpoint
Tulchingo Deli IV – Sunset Park
After party @ DeKalb Market

We didn’t make it to the last two due to time but opted to grab a beer and tacos at the Woods in Williamsburg before heading to DeKalb Market for the after party. The boys of the ride loved all the meat tacos at El Globo, recommended by Jeffrey Tastes at the Nixtamal killer. The veggie tacos there were pretty awful though. Overall, Los Hermanos was a group favorite again as well as the trucks on Roosevelt Ave.

A big thanks to my #bikenyc folks and Big Ming Tour riders

This past week has been a busy one! On Sunday we had our first Big Ming Chinatown Walking Tour and bike ride. This ride was important to me on a personal level because I’ve been helping my friend Ming get her walking tour business off the ground. A group of eight of us made the short ride over to Chatham square where we met up with the larger group.

Ming taught us a bunch about the history of Chatham square and gave us a very personal look into her life and knowledge of Chinatown. Did you know that Lin Zexu, the leader against the English-Chinese opium trade, statue stands with his back facing Wall St? Ming also intorduced us to her favorite restaurants and even a secret passageway. It was the first of a series of tours so if you didn’t make it out this time, more are in the works!

Also a big thank you to everyone who came out to the #bikenyc meetup on Oct 4th at Red Lantern Cycles! We had a huge turnout, of 40/50ish people, great vibes and one of the best birthdays I’ve had in awhile. Thanks to Brian of Red Lantern for being so awesome, providing the space, tunes and keeping the beer flowing. All of this was made possible by Google Places. Thanks! Until the next one, keep riding. Next up, Tour de Taco #3 this Sunday, Oct 9th. It is going to be epic.

3rd Annual Tour de Taco is coming Oct 9th

The most common question I am asked on all of my rides is, “when are you guys doing Tour de Taco?” It’s here people! Come join us October 9th, 11am under the Grand Army Plaza Arch, Brooklyn. RSVPs are open.

Tour de Taco 2011 will include five stops through Brooklyn and Queens. It is a fun and causal ride brought to you by three friends who love tacos and bicycles -myself, Emily and Tishon. This year’s ride will be capped to 75 people. If you show up and we are over the limit you are welcome to ride on your own.

Taco joints (subject to change) include:

Los Hermanos – Bushwick
TBD – Sunset Park
La Esquina – Williamsburg
El Globo – Corona
Roosevelt Ave Trucks – Queens
After party & group reunion @ Dekalb Market

For a pre tour meetup, come say hello at our #bikenyc meetup on Oct 4th @ 7 pm at Red Lantern Bicycles (345 Myrtle). There will be free beer, fun cyclists and your friendly organizers.

Highlights from El Tour de Taco!

This past Saturday, we completed an epic Tour de Taco Ride through Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. The ride itself was around 36 miles. Though nine stops were planned, we only made it to six taco joints – a pretty decent showing nonetheless. (See the list and map below.) Along the way each taco was rated on a scale of 1 -5 in the categories of tortilla, filling, guac and spices.

Personally I thought Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos, a tortilla factory and taco place, killed the competition. Their tacos had the best marinated meat and a crispy soft taco shell. That combined with the ambiance of sitting in an actual factory, placed it high on many lists.

Once the Tour de Taco ratings are complied, I believe the winning taco joint will receive an award. We’ll keep you posted!
